When we say that ITC Bintang feels like a family, we meant that in both figurative and literal sense. We have the most colorful married couple - Ivan and Cherie; and the wonderful Tham siblings - Melvin and Cin Yee! (Trivia: Melvin was a past president and CinYee is the current VPE.)

On our last meeting, we we were thrilled to have so many guests - including Ricky's brother, Joshua's brother, and Mr Tham himself!

And not to forget, the comeback kid - T.Y!

We at ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club raise a toast to Ivan Cheng, for he has claimed himself the second runner-up place in the District 51 Humorous Speech Contest! Ivan delivered his speech titled “The Tales of an Ex-Fisherman”, capturing the hearts of all the audiences and judges.

This accomplishment is a well-deserved reward for Ivan Cheng as a Toastmasters, and also for the club as a whole. For that, we expressed our sincerest gratitude to Ivan Cheng for bringing ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club’s name one step forward in the national level.

A little bit of work, a little bit of fun

While everyone else is busy getting drunk on a Friday night, the exco members of ITC Bintang are busy having an exco meeting.

As you can see from the photo above, our VPM, Gabriel was trying hard to say awake. Truly, it wasn't an easy feat especially when he has to listen to numbers, reports, and statistics by our lovely Treasurer, Lian Chin.

So, what have we discussed in the meeting? All I can share with you is that we have something exciting coming up for our 25th anniversary dinner!

Later on, we went to KLCC to watch the highest grossing movie in the current box office list - Real Steel! I don't have any photo taken of us going to the cinema, but I do have a photo of your favorite antagonist. Here you go, ladies!

Even for a club that is as old and established as ITC Bintang, we always find ourselves learning something new about Toastmasters every day. That's why we are always glad to invite members from other club as our guests, so we will have a lot to share with each other.

Last Wednesday, we had the honor of having Lakhmichand (a.k.a 'Lucky') to be our General Evaluator. His sharp, witty, and honest comments has brought much insights on how operations are done in most other clubs. Needless to say, we are grateful to have him around!

Quality leadership in action!

Due to inevitable circumstances at work, our president, Robin Yap, had to ran in late into the meeting. Thanks to our VPE, Cin Yee, for stepping up as the acting president!

Roles and responsibilities

For our traditional Sharing Moment session, Melvin Tham came up to talk about one fundamental aspect in every Toastmasters meeting - the roles! He enlightened us with a lot of commonly misunderstood expectations of each roles - for example, do you know that a Timer is also responsible for starting the meeting at 7.30 sharp? Now you do!

Open evaluation sesson

In case you haven't heard, our very own Ivan Cheng is competing for the Humorous Speech in the district level! So we had an open evaluation session where everyone can evaluate Ivan on his humorous speech. It was a fun and refreshing experience!

Welcome everyone, new and old!

We'd like to congratulate Justin Jesunathan for completing his first Competent Communicator speech! Though it was only his ice-breaker speech, we can guarantee you that Justin is no freshman to Toastmasters. As a matter of fact, he was chosen as the best assigned speaker for the night.

We also like give a warm welcome to our guest, Kaulan, who came all the way from China! Kaulan is also a veteran member of Toastmasters back in her hometown, and now that she has settled down in Malaysia, we hope she will join us in the fun!

As with every meeting, we ended the day with a yum-cha session at the stall just in front of LowYat Plaza. Even though it was the season of Oktoberfest, we rather spend our time with a good teh tarik, and a good conversation. Even Robin canceled his company-paid beer night to be with us (awwww).

And oh, before we left, our GE asked yours truly to turn around so he could take a photo. Turned out that he snatched my camera when I wasn't looking. Sneaky!

Ivan Cheng wins Area & Division contest

Ivan Cheng ACS, CL, did ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club proud at the Area 4 and Division P Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest held last week.

At the Area 4 contest, Ivan also won the Evaluation contest but came in first runner up at the Division P contest three days later.

Ivan will now represent Division P at the upcoming min convention in Malacca on 23 Oct 2011. Not to give too much away as to the nature of his speech, but we hope to put his lovely wife, Cherie, in a mermaid outfit!

ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club will be organising a group to go to the mini convention to cheer him on. So keep the weekend free and let’s have a presence at the mini convention.

Toastmasters session 2011/2012, we welcome you with open arms!

It might be a little bit too late to welcome you to the new term, but you know what they say, better late than really late!

Our new session of ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club started off with a bang, or should we say, a thud (made by the gavel, of course).

As with every first meeting of the term, we started off with the recitation of A Toasmaster's Promise, headed by our beloved great past-President, Victor 'Uncle' Lee.

For our installation day, we were really honoured to have TMIKL Toastmasters Club joining us. It was an evening full of laughter, conversation, and tangled threads. Kudos to our game master, Patrick Lim to have came up with such a clever, yet confusing game!

We even got a souvenir for our lovely past-President, Penny Chin. She better not forget us when she is in Australia.

As if official Toastmasters meetings aren't enough for us to see each other, we had a special dinner for Penny's farewell party and the birthday of our newly-elected President's, Robin Yap!

Them we had a little detour to the dance floor, and rock the night away.

We wish all the best of luck for Penny in her studies in Australia, and to our President, Robin Yap, you got a lot of work to do!

ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club International Speech Contest and Table Topic Contest 2010/2011.

An annual speech contests is an honorable Toastmaster tradition. It is an exciting event not only because it gives the speakers a chance to demonstrate the skills they learned or improved during their toastmaster’s careers, but also provides a great opportunity to the audience to enjoy the performance and cheer for their fellow toastmasters.

For the International speech contest of 2010/2011 we had four contestants fighting for the honor to represent our club on the area level. It was a battle of titans. We would like to express our gratitude to all participants for the great effort they made to be on the stage and to compete.

They are:

Thanks to Justin A/L Jesunathan, the organising chair, and his team of lovely and handsome elfs and ... what's a female elf or are they genderless...?.. for really going all out to organise this gathering. For those who haven't been to a Justin led event, you missed another good one.

If you missed it:

About 40 TM and guest attended this Christmas gathering.

Cherie and Ivan were judged by the crowd as "nice" in the table topic equivalent game of "Naughty or Nice". However, I'm very suspicious of Cherie though as I won't put it pass her to use my internet bandwidth without my knowledge

The Christmas tree decoration contest was hilarious... Well we lost the tree so we had to improvise with volunteers who got suckered. See pictures.

Gifts for everyone through our gift exchange from our morphed Christmas tree.

Scotish Dancing taught by our guest Charlie. We learned the Pat a cake polka, St. Bernard Waltz and the Friendship Waltz. Aiyoh, everyone so no stamina, after first dance, everyone rushing off to drink water. But then we're a speaking club, not a sports club.

Happy birthday to our Area P4 governor Victor Lee. I mean how is that for dedication to give up own one's birthday celebration to attend the gathering. That's call LEADERSHIP and this blog salutes you.

ITC Bintang and TMI KL Joint Christmas Meeting

Where: A full house at Banker’s Club for this joint meeting

How many people:47 toastmasters from at least four clubs that I came across.

Why: Well it’s the end of the year and a reason to get together before we all went away for our breaks.

Treats: Mince pies that Banker’s Club provided! Yum.. All gone.

Word of the Evening: Reconcile.

Five words to describe the night:

Brave: Ganesan, a guest of ITC Bintang and first time visitor, volunteered during table topic to speak in front of 47 people! Bravo!

Hilarious: Sanyan who joined us recently having moved from India and in the process of transferring his membership to ITC Bintang, gave a talk to introduce himself. He compared himself to what people his age had accomplished and that “Justin Timberlake had dated, broken up and gotten over Britney Spears” by the time he was Sanyan’s age

Enlightening: Victoria on the top 3 Taiwan tourist attractions not to be missed when visiting her country. Speech sponsored by Taiwan Tourism Authority! ;-)

Thoughtful: Ceril’s speech on the social construction of race, demonstrating how one can handle a sensitive subject with intelligence, rationality and dignity. Now if only our politicians can learn from him.

Scary: Shaila spoke on the downside of social media and networking. You really don’t know who you’re talking to in such situations. There is a saying that the person you’re msn or facebooking with might be a dog... figuratively or literally.. Ruff Ruff.

It’s that time again where Santa and his merry elves get busy preparing in their Magical Wonderland in the North Pole. Apparently though, they have outsourced their operations to Division P Toastmasters right here in KL!

Due to Malaysia’s generous tax incentives for Foreign Direct Investment, good old Santa Clause is opening his new operation branch codenamed, “Division P Christmas Get-Together” and wants to enlist YOU as his merry elf.

We, Toastmasters of Division P will be gathering the horde together to have a fun evening at the Titiwangsa Golf Club on the 18th December 2010. Make new friends, and then make fun of them in our Thematic Stage Activities lined up.

Satu Hati & ITC Bintang Joint Halloween Meeting

If you weren't there, you missed a great meeting. I mean there's lot of strange people in Toastmasters, but put them in costume and it gets more fun and colourful. Dracula's, failed wizards, witches in all shapes and sizes, bandits, scarecrow cum dog, and lots of people who didn't know who they were!

Firstly, thanks to Justin, Roger and Robin for organsing a really fun meeting. There was representatives from seven clubs at this special meeting. Even though it wasn't a traditional meetings, we had the usual role players to keep us all on track.

Speeches were given in creative way. There was a talk show "Late Night with Justin" which featured an actress, a chef and a singer whose answers were interjected by hilarious and random statements written down by the audience. We witness debates of a lost soul's conscience between an angel and a demon. At the end of the angel and demon presenting their case, the lost soul has to given an evaluation and choose a winner. There was also the next top model section of the meeting where we had to create our "models".

Congratulations to our club members Tham Cin Yee & Chong Sun Fu. Cin Yee won the Humorous Speech Contest for Area P4 with her speech.... ok this is secret lah.... but it was very funny.... which is why she won lah of course. Sun Fu was placed second behind the Area P4 winner in the Speech Evaluation contest and will be the alternate if for some reason the winner cannot make it.

So keep your diaries free for 25th September 2010 when the Division P Contest will take place. Time and place to be confirmed.

ITC Bintang joint installation night

What was it about?
ITC Bintang TM Club joined four other clubs to official install the new office bearers for the year 2010/2011.

Who attended?
About 20 ITC Bintang club members and family attended and we had a hilariously good time.

Did ITC Bintang shine?
Of course! We had the largest contingency among the five clubs. Three of our members made it to the final top six best dressed by theme (though we didn’t win... next time clap louder!!). Thanks to a couple of club member (and our very “tall” Cin Yee) who organised the entertainment which got everyone in the mood.

What now?
Well your new committee is officially installed and it is our duty to be humble servants to the club and to lead the club to higher goals. To do this we will need the support, participation and engagement of all club members to make our club be happening club.

Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests

It was a blast! An evening filled with jokes, joy and laugher. Our club hasn’t seen that many guests for a long time! Contestants were very enthusiastic, the audience was very responsive and judges were … judges as they meant to be.

First of all let’s congratulate the winner of humorous speech contest Tham Cin Yee with her excellent and very impressive debut as a contestant! I wish all of us have such a debut! Squeeze up, seasoned speakers new star is raising! Tham Cin Yee cranked up the audience with her “Single ladies’ guide” on how to stay away from ineligible boyfriends. That very logically came after Thomas Wiradikusuma’s instruction for guys on “how to get girls”. It was hilarious speech, Thomas, please keep your eye on the time next time, to avoid disqualification!

This time all the first prizes went to the same family: Melvin Tham (Cin Yee’s brother – not a secret!) got the first prize at the Evaluation contest. Well done, Melvin, you managed to outrun such experienced Toastmasters as Chong Sun Fu and Ivan Cheng, second and third places respectively.

ITC Bintang TM Club Love Fest

It was a love fest at last night’s ITC Bintang TM meeting, with the theme “P.S. I love you”, appropriately chosen by our club Casanova (single ladies come and visit the club and meet him). We had a really great time, with lots of laugh, and a very active backbenchers club to add to the liveliness of the meeting.

Leonnie Wong did her first speech, and a powerful speech it was on how she has come to accept and adapting to changes. Our visiting speaker Ricky tried to persuade us to use his product to become a millionaire.

The club also had a first, a three way for our table topic session. A three way tie that is ;-) with Thomas, Suhana and Gabriel voted favourite speakers.

Suhana Sidik, past Area P4 Governor, was on hand to recognise the efforts of ITC Bintang’s past Vice President of Public Relations (VPPR), Robin Yap. Robin was third in the District 51 - Website Surf and Win Contest. Congrats Robin.

ITC Bintang Toastmasters club, is not only a platform for you to improve communication skill and leadership skill, but to expand your network by joining activities.

On the 22nd June 2010, few of our members got together in Istana Budaya for musical theater "KITA" which with the 1Malaysia concept. Thanks for Victoria!

"Kita" tells the story of love, unity and multi-culturalism portrayed via Rahman, Cheong dan Amish.

It was set in a rubber estate in the 1970s in Teluk Intan, Perak.

"Kita" had been listed in the Malaysian Book of Records as a musical theatre with a cast comprising the most number of races.

It is jointly organised by Xi Yue Art and Culture with cooperation of the Prime Minister's Department and the Information Communication and Culture Ministry.

Directed by Ho Lin Huay, the cast include Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan, Hafiz AF7, Nas Adila, Eric Lin and Michael Rao.

Najib also received a certificate from a Malaysia Book of Records representative on behalf of the Information Communication and Culture Ministry as recognition for the show.

How Joining Toastmasters Can See You Through

Has your company called it quits? Have you been downsized into a smaller office, or worse yet, the streets? With a dire economic crisis going on around the world, sooner or later, you’ll probably feel the squeeze of corporate belt-tightening tactics. How you react to the bad news can have a major impact on your future. And though you may feel it deep in your heart, panicking is not an option. So how do you face such harrowing circumstances without letting it all force you into making unwise decisions?

If you have already been laid off, it won’t help to sit at home alone contemplating the problems of the world. Consider, instead, using that extra time to boost your skills and résumé. Use your time wisely and you may revive your career in the end. Toastmaster Linda Martins-Mann, who belongs to four clubs in California, was laid off from her job earlier this year. But her spirits and goals remain high. She says, “Toastmasters has shown me that I am worth more than I ever thought.”

Mark Perew, a member of Toastmasters clubs in North Carolina and California, rebounded from a brief period of unemployment and even created a better future. “I was laid off in early 2003,” he says. “That was not a good time to be looking for a job. I credit Toastmasters with getting me employed again within three weeks.” This may seem fast, even for a Toastmaster, but Perew points to his Toastmasters training: “Interviews are just real-life Table Topics [impromptu speaking] sessions. I knew I had to answer the question that was asked; do it in a limited time; have a beginning, middle and end; use good eye contact; include personal stories; add appropriate humor and connect with the interviewer. My time in Toastmasters made it possible for me to accomplish all that and get a better-paying job.”

After relocating to San Jose, California, Renee Lam attended a number of Toastmasters clubs during a time when she didn’t have a job. She visited a flurry of club meetings in the space of two weeks – and says it produced all sorts of practical benefits, including getting an informational interview with someone and meeting a couple of people willing to circulate her résumé. “I want to emphasize that active participation in Toastmasters pays off,” Lam says, “Keep Toastmasters dues in your budget, even during unemployment.”

For Lisa Westlund of the Simi Valley club in California, it was a case of role reversal. She had worked in management for 27 years and was used to conducting interviews and hiring others. She says, “Being on the interviewee side is totally different and after so many years of being in charge, I needed to gain confidence to go on job interviews and also to have impromptu conversations.” Lisa joined Toastmasters to learn how to handle being on the other side of the table. She was hooked from the first meeting and adds, “I also gained the confidence to not only go on job interviews but to land a great job with a great company.”

If you’re still working but a layoff appears imminent, try not to panic. This may not be easy to do when you see others forced out, one by one, all around you. But panicking won’t save you or your co-workers. Preparation is the key. When Judi Goldberg of the Minutemen club in Massachusetts was laid off, it did not come as a total surprise. She handled the incident calmly by relying, in part, on her Toastmasters training. She says Toastmasters “helped me push on and just know I will get another job.”

Beverly Murray belonged to a corporate Toastmasters club made up of members from the financial industry giant, Wachovia. With their company in crisis, the club members were too busy to attend the meetings. And though the club disbanded as a result of this, the good news is that each former member knows about the Toastmasters program and can join another club when the opportunity arises. Murray continues to have faith in Toastmasters and says, “I plan to find another local club to join after the first of the year.”

You can increase your worth to your company and, if necessary, to interviewers simply by building your communication and leadership skills. Have you checked to see if your company offers Toastmasters meetings? Joining your company’s club – or a neighborhood group – can be an easy way to accomplish this goal.

It is alarming to be surrounded by a global financial crisis in which so many giants of industry and finance are going under. These disasters leave us wondering how to navigate such rough seas without sinking, but the answer remains the same: The best way to survive is to set a course that includes daily, weekly and monthly objectives. Eventually, with steady progress, you will steer through the troubled waters of today and reach the safety of that distant shore. You will get there. And when you do, you’ll be glad you’ve prepared for it

The first thing most people hear about Toastmasters is that membership can help them become better presenters and conquer public speaking fears. That’s true, but it’s also true that Toastmasters offers much more. By participating in the meetings, members enjoy learning and practicing skills in various areas that can improve not only their social lives, but their professional lives as well.

If you’ve never attended a Toastmasters meeting, you may be puzzled by the assortment of activities available to members. Not everyone gives a prepared speech at every meeting. Volunteers enjoy several roles that help them develop confidence in other areas. Furthermore, a member can develop skills without ever volunteering – simply showing up and having fun can bring surprising benefits.

For example, time management is a skill that is prized in many avenues of life – particularly in the workplace – and members enjoy plenty of practice in this area. Several key events in each meeting are timed, and everyone receives feedback with notes on their successes as well as tips for improvement in working with the clock. It’s amazing how quickly a new member learns to keep the time limits on presentations.

A Cordial Atmosphere
Another benefit of membership is the camaraderie that develops between the members. Many people join for similar reasons – perhaps they’re overcoming a fear of public speaking or they want to move up the corporate ladder. Because of their shared circumstances, it’s hard not to form friendships. When you’ve applauded your fellow Toastmaster for presenting her first speech, you’ll recognize that look of gratitude on her face. The bond of friendship that forms between people who are learning and enjoying fun times together can last a lifetime. And the opportunities for networking abound.

But what about the fun? Some parts of a meeting seem to draw laughter. For example, Toastmasters often practice their impromptu speaking skills. Just watch the antics of volunteers who boldly stand and answer surprise questions in one- to two-minute sessions. This might seem like a game – and to some degree, it is – but it’s a game with hidden benefits. Everyone who participates learns to think and speak coherently and without hesitation. They build confidence each time they master a topic – which really helps later with such challenges as job interviews. Even a member who simply watches and applauds will develop critical thinking skills while having fun trying to figure out how he might have answered that last question.

A Place to Develop Skills
When a member does perform a speech, she benefits in more ways than merely presenting a talk to an audience of friends and supporters. She also learns to write a speech that dazzles. The first few projects in the Competent Communication manual, the basic manual for Toastmasters, offers help in developing speechwriting skills. Members can practice organizing their thoughts on the page, getting to their point quickly and using language with eloquence. This leads to clear written communication the member can rely on – whether she’s writing a cover letter for a résumé or a personal note to a friend.

Some volunteers can build their organizational and record-keeping skills while they help to set up and run the meetings or keep track of their fellow members’ progress. It’s not hard to learn the steps to success in these projects, and the volunteers are then able to transfer what they’ve learned to their careers and personal lives.

The skills don’t stop there. When members spend time in Toastmasters meetings, their confidence grows. They discover that they can successfully perform the same kinds of activities outside of Toastmasters. Their circle of experience widens, and they’re ready to try new challenges. This is why so many companies host Toastmasters meetings in their offices. Members become stronger, more confident leaders at work – and highly valued employees.

All of these provide Toastmasters with opportunities to develop skills that reach beyond giving a speech. And for many members, the benefits of this personal growth may mean more in the long run to their success in life. Whether they’re interested in honing leadership skills, strengthening one-on-one communication, practicing presentations, excelling at job interviews or just becoming a more articulate or dynamic speaker, Toastmasters is a benefit to everyone.

Another year has gone but it's ok because at ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club, we celebrate it. This year, it's TREASURE HUNT at Taman Pertanian, Shah Alam.

The idea was hatched during our Exco meeting somewhere at Pavilion when we were deliberating on ideas to celebrate the new year as dinner, bbq, cake cutting, among others had ran outdated. The young and vibrant members of the Exco wanted something fresh, something hot and something exciting. We cracked our skulls thinking about the future of the club and chartering challenging courses in accordance to our aspiration to be the top club of Bukit Bintang.

But alas, 5 minutes had gone and we were still waiting for our coffee. In a fit of low blood sugar and when the mind started meandering, Robin Yap (yours truly) started blabbering and suggested Treasure Hunt. He wanted to run away from responsibility and how he wished he kept his mouth shut for another minute as the waiter was serving his iced coffee at that time but he couldn't. Unanimously, the idea was accepted and Robin was pressured to walk the talk.

Luckily for him, he wasn't left alone by the members and waited till the day come but he was duly assisted by his team of Exco namely the handsome President, Victor Lee; the pretty VPE, Penny Chin; the smart VPPR, Jeffrey Teh; both charming Secretary and SAA, Christina Lim and Evonne Chong, and the witty Gabriel Chong.

He was touched. Tears rolled down his cheeks and from that day on, he vowed to serve Toastmasters till his last ounce of breath. He knew he would never ever meet such personalities outside the circle of Toastmasters.

Completing Your CC - A Practical Guide To Getting it Done!!

For many new Toastmasters, the first compelling goal of the educational program is the Competent Communicator award. It’s clearly defined in the Competent Communication manual that’s included in the New Member Kit, and it’s a requirement for most of the advanced awards that Toastmasters offers. But what’s the best way to earn your CC? How can you harness your initial enthusiasm and complete those ten speech projects with a minimum of hassle and procrastination?

Schedule It
One very important step is to give yourself a set of deadlines—one for the completion of the entire manual, and one for each of the 10 projects. Without deadlines, tasks of this scope usually move to the bottom of the priority list, where they have a tendency to stay for a long time.

Strict deadlines aren’t for everyone. As Douglas Adams, author of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, puts it: “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing noise they make as they fly by.” But the important lesson here is to decide how much time you want to give yourself to complete the manual, and monitor your progress as you go.

Break it Down
Feel like you’re too busy to work on your speech projects? It may help to think of each project as a series of small, discrete tasks, and devote whatever time you have to completing those tasks whenever you can. You don’t have to complete all of the preparation for a speech in one sitting; often, five or ten minutes are enough to make significant progress on an upcoming speech.

Taking a break at work? Jot down a few ideas and then send them to your home e-mail address.
Practice your speech in the car on the way to work.
As soon as you finish a speech, immediately begin writing down ideas for the next one.

Ask for Help
Ask your mentor for advice. Seek out other club members who have completed several Toastmasters awards, and find out how they got the job done. Also, the club’s vice president education will be particularly interested in helping you complete your educational goals. Other club officers also have a stake in your success, so be sure to ask them for help if you need it, too.

Have Fun!
Membership in Toastmasters reaps many rewards, not the least of which is the pure enjoyment of sharing your ideas, making connections and improving your speaking skills. So remember to have a good time planning and delivering your speeches, and before you know it you’ll have that CC award you’ve been dreaming about, and be well on your way to the next goal.

Last Meeting of term 2008/2009

17th June 2009 marked the last day of our education term 2008/2009. As usual, our meeting started with the SAA calling the meeting to order followed by the President, Melvin Tham's opening remark. After a brief introduction of all the members, comes the Toastmaster of the Evening.( role played by Yip Tat Meng tonight) He really did sweettalk us all through the evening.

Then we have our Table Topics Session which test us on impromptu speaking for a 2 minute duration followed by the Table Topics Evaluation.

After a 10-minute interval for a little refreshment, comes our Assignment Speech Session. Each speaker is to present an assignment speech within an allocated time following the guide provided Toastmaster International so that we achieve the intended results in the end of the day.

Soon after, the General Evaluator(role played by Mandy Ong, Area P1 Governor tonight) called out the respective Speech Evaluators to give a feed back on the speeches presented. The Grammarian, 'Ah' Counter (the speech crutchers guard) and the Time Keeper presented their reports later and the General Evaluator gave her general remarks of the whole meeting.

We had a great joint meeting between ITC Bintang TMC and Maxis TMC on the 5th May 2009, at Federal Hotel. There were guests from Premium Advance TMC, Ukay TMC, TMIKL and Mid Valley TMC as well.

Ivan Cheng, our senior Toastmaster of ITC Bintang was the Toastmaster of the Evening and he has brought us along the night with a fantastic programme.

We had a total of 5 Toastmasters presented their CC manual. they were as below

We had just concluded our International Speech and Table Topics Contest 2009 at our last meeting (4th Feb 2009). The Creative Session

One fine evening, our senior Toastmaster Ivan Cheng came up with an ingenious idea of spicing up our usual and ordinary meeting every alternate Wednesday. We call it the Creative Session.

Every member may contribute something to stimulate the brains of the members in a fixed period of 10 minutes.

The Sergeant-At-Arms

The role of the Sergeant-of-Arms is extremely important. Along with the Toastmaster, he or she is responsible for setting the pace and tone of the meeting.

The Sergeant-at-Arms has three primary functions,
(1) Set up the meeting room
(2) Introduce the President (or Presiding Officer if president is not available)
(3) Re-open the meeting after the break.

Before the meeting starts:

- Arrive at the meeting early meeting to ensure enough time to set up the room properly.
- Set up meeting tables, make sure there are adequate chairs for participants and guests.
- Place the following items at participant seats around the meeting tables:
. Water containers
. Water Glasses
. Evaluation sheets
. Voting Containers
- Ensure that the lectern and gavel are placed at the front of the room
- Place the blue and gold Toastmasters banner in full view of club members and guests
- Position the Welcome to Toastmasters sign in the window or entrance
- Set up the guest table with brochures, magazines and membership information available,
guest name tags, guest registration book and pens.

During the meeting:
- After the break is over, go back to the podium and call the meeting to order. Re-introduce
the Toastmaster. Lead applause and shake hands with the TME as you leave the podium.

After the meeting:
- Make sure the room is cleaned up and ensure all items are returned to their storage
locations.

Division P Humorous & Evaluation Contest 2008

Held on the 18th October 2008 (Saturday) at Menara Telekom, the Division P Humorous and Evaluation Contest 2008 had proved to be a fierce battle between the contestants. The audience were WOW-ed!! by the eloquency and the ability to make them laugh till the tears came out. The competition was stiff and has a class of its own. Whoever present on that day would naturally believe that each of the contestant is a champion of his/her own right. Simply amazing!!

Our club member Lim Kah Soon did an excellent job with his "Chicken" story. Although his journey ended there, he has set another precedent of competitiveness to our club members who are aspiring to be oratory champions.

ITC Fellowship at Neway Karaoke

It was last Saturday, 4th Oct 2008, Lily Chee organised a Karaoke session at Neway, Galaxie (opposite IOI Mall), a kind of fellowship for the ITC Bintang Toastmasters Club. The food was mediocre but the singing rendition was SPLENDID!! (Should I put a pair of inverted commas above the word?)

We had an excellent time over there singing our hearts out and alleviating the tension and stressfulness of our everyday life. I'm looking forward to another outing like this. Maybe ITC Bintang Idol perhaps;)

The Timer

One of the purposes of Toastmasters is to teach people to express thoughts within a specific time interval. The timer is responsible for monitoring time and emphasizing the importance of time to everyone. Each segment of the meeting is timed and each speech is timed. The Timer operates the timing lights/cards, which indicates to the Speaker how long he or she has been talking.

Before the Meeting

Confirms scheduled program participants with the Toastmaster and General Evaluator.
Confirms the time required for each prepared speech with the Speakers.
Prepares a brief explanation of the Timer's duties for the benefit of guests and new members.

Upon Arrival at the Meeting

Gets timing and signaling devices and practices operating them.
Makes sure timing light/cards is placed where it can be easily seen by the Speakers, but is not obvious to others, such as back of room.

During the Meeting

Explains Timer's duties when called upon (2 minute slot).
Explains the timing rules and timing light/cards when called upon.
Records each Speaker's name and the time used. Table Topic Speakers, prepared Speakers and Evaluator must speak within plus or minus 30s of allotted time.
Presents report when introduced by Toastmaster (2 minute slot).

The Table Topics Evaluator

The Table Topics Evaluator evaluates everyone who delivers a table topic. They do not evaluate the Table Topics Master (that is the General Evaluator’s role).

Each evaluation is based on your objective opinion of the speech. It is not telling members how it should be done.

Prior to the meeting:

Read these guidelines. They relate specifically to the role of Table Topics Evaluator in our club.
Evaluating a table topic is like evaluating a speech in miniature. Approach it in the same way. To help you evaluate Table Topics, read as much as you can about speech evaluation. Sources include the club website, your CC manual, your CL manual, the Toastmaster’s booklet included in your new member pack, back issues of Toastmaster’s magazines and Toastmaster’s International website (www.toastmasters.org).
Try to attend Evaluation education sessions in the club and Evaluation Workshops in or outside the club.
Ask you mentor for help, if necessary.

At the meeting:

Arrive early, at least by 7.15pm, and let the Toastmaster know you are there.
If you are working on the CL manual, ask one of the members to evaluate you, give them the manual and make sure they complete it by the end of the evening.

During the Table Topics session:

Listen carefully to each speaker!
Write down each speaker’s name
Notice where they are sitting in the room so that you can look at them and include them when you give your evaluation.
Write notes on each speaker. It is useful to draw a line down the middle of your paper. On one side write things they did well. On the other side write suggestions for improvement. That way, your notes will be organised and easy to read when you give your report.
Don’t try to write everything down or you may get lost in your notes later.
Take into account the speaker’s level of skill and the stage reached in the manuals (if you know).
Count the number of speakers. Calculate 30 seconds per speaker, add 30 seconds for your introduction plus 30 seconds for presenting ribbons. This is your total time.

Your evaluation (approx 30 seconds for each speaker):

Deliver your evaluation from or in front of the lectern (not from your seat).
Never compare the speaker to another speaker or member.
Give constructive, balanced feedback, i.e. talk about 1 or 2 things the speaker did well and 1 or 2 points for improvement.
Focus on the above. Don’t ramble, make jokes, talk about your own experiences. No one is interested and it makes you seem nervous. Also, you won’t have time!
Be confident in your own opinion, i.e. don’t try to be nice and “whitewash”- give only praise. That is of no value to the speaker.
Avoid the temptation to go over the content – stick to how the speech was delivered.
Don’t address only the speaker, try to include the rest of the audience. The points you raise are useful to them also.
Make each evaluation a well structured mini speech lasting 30 seconds using the skills you have learned as your performance will be evaluated at the end of the evening – by the General Evaluator.
You may present a ribbon for Best TT, Most Improved TT or Best Gestures to the member or guest whom you think has shown particular skill or made an obvious improvement. This is not compulsory.

How this role helps you

You will enhance your listening skills by listening intently – the pace is faster.
You will practise making quick and accurate evaluations. No time for indecisiveness.
You will practice evaluating the very good and the not so good speech in the same evening.
You will learn to focus your evaluations.
You will practise delivering several well focused, well structured mini speeches to the members.
You will practise time management skills.
You may be able to use it to advance your CL manual.
You will feel more confident about entering evaluation contests.

Joint Installation Dinner 2008/2009

On the 26th July 2008, our club, ITC Bintang together with TMIKL, TTDI and IEM jointly held our annual Installation Dinner at Bukit Gita Bayu; a residential estate surrounded by serene rainforest accompanied by a lake that offers a tranquil environment. Best for relaxation and winding down purposes.

However, it was not a bit calm or even quiet when the Toastmasters stormed in. Being loud as we are, we almost turned the whole Clubhouse upside down. I couldn't put it in words and so I let the pictures tell the whole story.....

Ah Counter

When you are the Ah Counter for the meeting

Listens for and reports on "ahs," "ums" and other speech "crutches"

This is truly an exercise in expanding one’s listening skills. The Ah counter listens carefully to everyone who speaks during the meeting for words or utterances that do not add value to the speech. These include repeated word, such as I… I, or The…the. It also includes: Ahs, ers, ums, as well as the over use of and, but, and or.

Prepare in advance

:: Prepare a brief explanation of the duties of Ah counter.

During the meeting

:: When introduced, briefly state the duties of the Ah counter.

:: During the meeting, list everyone in the room who speaks. Then record any filler words, ahs, ums, etc, and who said them. Note: Your duties start when the meeting begins, so be prepared.

:: When called on at the end of the evaluation portion of the meeting, stand by your chair and give your report.

:: Remember, the object of the report is to inform speakers of their use of filler words — not embarrass them.

:: When giving a report, it is not necessary to name each person with the count of verbal pauses. Generally, naming those who did exceptionally well and one or two of those who need to work on this habit is sufficient.

:: Be gentle to guests (and newer members).

The Table Topics Master

Purpose:
The purpose of table topics is to have members "think on their feet" and speak for one to two minutes. It is also meant to give people who do not have a speaking role an opportunity to speak.

Preparation:
Prepare a brief but thorough summary of your role as Table Topics Master that explains your role in the program to visiting guests. You may want to include comments about the skills that are improved during the exercises. Select a theme and at least 6 table topics questions that promote easy discourse. (There may not be time for all of them.) Feel free to be as original as you'd like, but make sure to phrase your questions so that the speaker will know clearly what they are to talk about. Keep in mind that the goal of Table Topics is to provide an opportunity for members and guests to speak extemporaneously. This is not a "stump the speaker" exercise. The Toastmaster will be contacting you the week before the meeting to confirm your participation and answer any questions you may have.

Before the Meeting:
Take a look at the meeting agenda to see which members do not have roles, or have only minor roles, in the meeting. These are the people you will want to call on first. If guests arrive early, briefly explain table topics and ask whether they would be willing to participate if time allows.

During the Meeting:
When the Toastmaster calls on you, approach the lectern and shake the Toastmasters hand. You are now in control of the meeting.

Explain the purpose and rules of table topics (this should take no more than two minutes):

The purpose is to learn to speak on your feet, clearly and concisely, and to make sure everyone at the meeting gets a chance to speak
The respondent is encouraged to answer the question, but since the real purpose is to become comfortable speaking to an audience, the respondent can choose another table topic question or speak on whatever topic they are comfortable speaking about.
Responses should be 1-2 minutes. (Explain the timing cards if it was not done earlier.)
Encourage the use of the word of the day.
Guests always have the option to decline.

Introduce your theme or reason for the questions. Try to keep the program light and positive. Be brief, allowing others to talk.

Ask your first question, then randomly call on a person to answer. This lets everyone mentally prepare to answer the question. First call on members with no other speaking roles, then members with minor roles, then willing guests, and finally others on the agenda who would like to participate. Be sure to give guests easy questions.

Stay at the lectern until the person arrives, shake hands, and then be seated nearby. When the person concludes, be ready to approach the lectern to shake hands and release the person to sit down.

On completion of the session, thank all participants and return control of the meeting back to the Toastmaster of the Evening.

The Grammarian

Role Objective	Assist members use the power of good grammar and a rich vocabulary in their presentations.
Description of Role	A brief role focussing on spoken English used in presentations, designed to be both educational and amusing.
Preparation	The Word of the Day (WOTD), if used, needs to be thought out in advance. It is helpful to use visual aids for this and these should be put up on display before the meeting. If the Chair has made you aware of a meeting theme you should choose a WOTD that fits into that theme.
Timing	One minute early in the program to explain your role, what you are looking for and the WOTD. Two minutes toward the end of the program to report on what you have observed and make any recommendations and commendations.
Procedure	Early in the meeting you will be given a minute to announce to the Club what your theme or challenge for the day will be. Either introduce a Word for the Day or use it as an opportunity to ride a particular hobby horse! You might elect to focus on verbalised pauses (ums, ahs and the like) or use of slang. During your first session, explain your role to guests. If you elect to use a Word of the Day (WOTD), consider using one or more visual aids, large sheets of paper or board or the whiteboard. Your aids might show the WOTD's meaning, derivation and pronunciation and maybe a couple of examples of correct usage of the word and maybe even common misuses Visual aids can be very helpful to encourage usage of the WOTD. Some Grammarians use audible alerts during Table Topics to signal a good or bad use of grammar. All aids and props are best positioned and readied before the meeting starts as it can be very difficult to deal with this in your allotted minute. Consider putting up visual aids with blue tack or adhesive tape at various strategic positions around the room where they will serve to remind participants of your challenge to them. You might choose to obscure your main display and "unveil" it during your minute. Feel free to remind members of your visuals and thus your challenge, in any way you can without disrupting the meeting (totally). During the meeting listen carefully and be prepared to report on: Correct use of the Word of the Day Good use or misuse of words Incorrect pronunciation Good word pictures Cliches Excellent/powerful language use Poor sentence construction Vocalised pauses (ahs, ums) There is no need to be exhaustive or highly detailed. Illustrative examples are all that is required. In your 2 minutes at the end of the meeting give a report which should be positive, helpful and illuminating. 2 minutes is not long (no matter how it might feel when you give a Table Topic) so try to be concise. You merely need to note who used your WOTD (or whatever you asked the club to do) and any grammatical points that you think were skillful or could be improved. Use tact, understanding and basic evaluation principles (eg CRC) and avoid evaluating any guests who may have spoken. Definitely use humour, if that is your style.
Key points	This role needs to be concisely delivered, you don't have a lot of time, but it should be fun and informative. Use your originality to make the function memorable.
Check List	Be prepared - work out well beforehand what you are going to do with your timeslot. Pay detailed attention so that you can give a concise report.
Desirable Outcome	Meeting attendees will be aware of a selected useful additional wordgrammar usages. and/or

The Olympics of Oratory: World Championship of Public Speaking 2008

On Saturday, 16 August, LaShunda Rundles made history by becoming the 2008 World Champion of Public Speaking. She is the first woman to win the contest in more than 20 years! (She's only the 4th woman to win since the contest began in 1938 - though Toastmasters was a "male only" organization for many years.) Not forgetting our very own K. Loghandran who did us proud by grabbing the 1st Runner-Up position.

The Toastmaster of the Evening

You are the emcee.

The Toastmaster is a meeting’s director and host. You won’t usually be assigned this role until you are thoroughly familiar with the club and its procedures. If your club’s customs vary from those described here, ask your mentor or the club vice president education (VPE) for pointers well before the meeting.

Begin preparing for your role several days in advance. You’ll need to know who will fill the other meeting roles and if a theme is planned for the meeting. You’ll also need an up-to-date meeting agenda. Get this information from your VPE.

Next, contact the general evaluator and make sure you’re both working from the same agenda. Ask the general evaluator to call other members of the evaluation team – speech evaluators, Topicsmaster, timer, grammarian, Ah-Counter – and remind them of their responsibilities. Remember, as the director, you’re responsible for ensuring all of the meeting’s players know their parts and hit their marks.

To help the Topicsmaster, create a list of program participants already assigned a speaking role so he or she can call on others first.

As the Toastmaster, you’ll introduce each speaker. If a speaker will not write his or her own introduction, you will write it. Introductions must be brief and carefully planned. Contact speakers several days before the meeting to ask about:

Speech topic and title
Manual and project title
Assignment objectives
Speaker’s personal objectives
Delivery time

You need all of these elements to create your introductions. Remember to keep the introductions between 30-60 seconds in length.

Of course, you want to avoid awkward interruptions or gaps in meeting flow so your last preparation step before the meeting is to plan remarks you can use to make smooth transitions from one portion of the program to another. You may not need them, but you should be prepared for the possibility of awkward periods of silence.

The Big Show
On meeting day, show up early. You’ll need time to make sure the stage is set for a successful meeting. To start, check with each speaker as they arrive to see if they have made any last-minute changes to their speeches – such as changing the title.

You and the speakers will need quick and easy access to the lectern. Direct the speakers to sit near the front of the room and make sure they leave a seat open for you near the front.

When it’s time to start the program, the club president calls the meeting to order. Sometimes he or she will make announcements, introduce guests or conduct other club business before introducing you.

When you’re introduced, the president will wait until you arrive at the lectern before being seated. (This is why you should sit at the front of the room.)

Pay attention to the time. You are responsible for beginning and ending the meeting on time. You may have to adjust the schedule during the meeting to accomplish this. Make sure each meeting segment adheres to the schedule. If time allows, you can make some brief remarks about Toastmasters’ educational program for the benefit of guests and new members before you move forward with the introductions:

Introduce the general evaluator as you would any speaker. Remain standing near the lectern after your introduction until the speaker has assumed control of the lectern, then be seated. The general evaluator will introduce the other members of the evaluation team.
Introduce the Topicsmaster as you would any speaker. Remain standing near the lectern after your introduction until the speaker has assumed control of the lectern, then be seated.

In some clubs it is customary for the Toastmaster and the person assuming control of the lectern to exchange a handshake. This isn’t required, but it’s sometimes done to help new members recognize when control of the lectern passes from the Toastmaster to the speaker and vice versa.

After the Table Topics session has concluded, most clubs begin the speaking program. Introduce each speaker in turn.

You will lead the applause before and after the Table Topics session, each speaker and the general evaluator. When each presenter has finished, you return to the lectern so the speaker can be seated and you can begin your next introduction.

At the conclusion of the speaking program, request the timer’s report and vote for the best speaker, if your club offers this award.

Briefly reintroduce the general evaluator.

While votes are being tallied, invite comments from guests and announcements (such as verification of next week’s program).

Present trophies or ribbons as practiced by your club.

Request the thought for the day if your club provides for this. Be sure to find out when your club does this during a meeting. Many clubs end on this note while others prefer to begin a meeting with this thought in mind.

Adjourn the meeting, or if appropriate, return control to the club president.

Serving as Toastmaster is an excellent way to practice many valuable skills as you strive to make the meeting one of the club’s best. Preparation is key to your success.
